An exhaustive, "reader friendly", seminal, scholarly work.
Gender And Archaeology: Contesting The Past is the first work of critically scholarship to review the developing study of gender in past societies through archaeological evaluation of their material cultures. Roberta Gilchrist surveys the feminist critique of archaeology and feminist epistemologies, showing the unique perspective that gender archaeology can bring to bear on such diverse issues as the division of labor, life course, sexuality, and gender identity. Heterocyclic Chemistry
Published in Hardcover by Longman Science & Technology (April, 1985)
Author: T. L. Gilchrist
Average review score:

Heterocyclic Chemistry in a Nutshell
No organic chemist should be without it. This book contains everything you need to know about the preparation and subsequent reactions of heterocyclic ring structures from simple to complex, and from the common to the seldom seen.

The book is well organized and concise. An advanced chemistry degree is not needed to understand it. Individuals with B.S. degrees in chemistry and related sciences on up will find it useful.

The book has a substantial word of mouth following, which is how I came to purchase it. I am a patent attorney in the chemical arts and find reason to refer to it several times a week.

I Cannot Get You Close Enough: Three Novellas
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (November, 1990)
Author: Ellen Gilchrist
Average review score:

Thank Heavens for Ellen Gilchrist!
I loved these novellas. Each one could have been published as a "little" book (the size of HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT or ELLEN FOSTER) and most certainly "passed" for a novel.

"Winter" was a gripping tour-de-force of Anna Hand, the late author, on a madcap trip to Europe, trying to gather evidence on her evil sister-in-law. "Olivia DeHaviland Hand" introduces us to Olivia, the long lost daughter of Daniel Hand, and niece to Anna and Helen. I must say I loved "A Summer In Maine" because all of the characters talk, drink, make love, and stir up mischief.

I just hope Ellen Gilchrist writes as fast as she can. She's a poet, she's a philosopher, she's a genie, she's underrated!!! Some of her characters border on alcoholism, but they are so deftly drawn, they come across as flesh and blood; in lesser hands, these women would have come across as melodramatic vixens. Her work is loud and subtle, wild and innocent. I noticed on Amazon that she has another book coming out in 2000.

I Make Music
Published in Hardcover by Writers & Readers (August, 1991)
Authors: Eloise Greenfield and Jan Spivey Gilchrist
Average review score:

Great story
I love to see positive Black Books and Eloise Greenfield fits the bill. This story tells of a toddler and the various ways she makes music. The pictures are simple yet full of life and the story really flows. My Maddie requests this book over and over so I think this is the perfect book for any toddler.

I, Rhoda Manning, Go Hunting with My Daddy: And Other Stories
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (September, 2002)
Author: Ellen Gilchrist
Average review score:

Ellen Gilchrist's Stories are Spun from the Heart
Rhoda Manning is five years old when readers meet this recurring character in this collection of short stories by award-winning author Ellen Gilchrist. Rhoda Manning owns the stories and reveals them as a five year old child in the title story.

She also reveals herself as a mature adult and divorced mother of three and as an elderly woman clinging to all that is good from the past. Parents of teens will have no problem identifying with Rhoda's tale of woe as she parents three teenage boys who are wreckless and wild, spending their days crafting ways to defy their mother and their authoritarian grandfather.

It is a tale of pot and lies and the overwhelming job of parenting in the 70's. The brash and bold Rhoda is almost equaled by another Gilchrist regular, Nora Jane Harwood.

In this tale written prior to September 11, the protagonist finds herself in the locker room of an athletic club in Berkley, Ca when an earthquake jolts Nora and her two year old, Little Freddy. ...

...This is a story that ends too soon with characters so real you want them to live on.

Another story, "The Abortion", Gilchrist's characters reveal their courage and character ...

Gilchrist's stories and characters are above all else real. Their trials and tribulations are woven loosely in some cases, but always with an echo of familiarity.

In the Land of Dreamy Dreams
Published in Audio Cassette by Books on Tape (January, 1981)
Author: Ellen Gilchrist
Average review score:

Ground Zero
This is a must for any Gilchrist fan. It's her first collection of short stories everyone will be delighted to read about the beginning of Nora Jane, Rhoda and other fabulous characters. All the stories are wonderful, but my favorite is the short wistful piece, "1944." It's not really a story so much as a beautiful fragment of memory.

Are Publishers Coo-Coo?
It's frightening that a book like this can go out of print. Shivers are going up and down my spine this very second! I am going to buy all hardcovers by this marvelous author lest this happen again. I am buying them right now. Thank goodness Amazon can locate these "lost" gems.

Very user friendly, beautiful pictures, and great ideas.
While I was thumbing through my new book, a good friend was looking over my shoulder, and asked if I would buy her a copy. We were both very impressed with the color pictures and great ideas. Instead of ordering through her book club we decided to look at Amazon.com. There is was.
